Walter is a shareholder in the firm's Oil, Gas and Energy Resources Section. Walter joined the firm in 2011 after having practiced law in San Angelo, Texas for 25 years. Although he has added the practice of oil and gas law to his area of concentration, he is experienced in many areas of law and is Board Certified in Farm and Ranch Real Estate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Prior to entering the practice of law, Walter was a banking officer with Texas Commerce Bank, N.A. in Houston and later in the ranching business. Today, influenced by his heritage, experience, and education, he continues to have a passion for the land and its resources.

AREAS OF CONCENTRATION

Oil, Gas and Energy Resources Law

Walter's practice includes representing both oil companies and individuals in oil and gas matters. Presently a large portion of his practice is devoted to examining titles for drilling, division order and acquisition purposes. He also represents clients in leasing mineral rights, drafting oil and gas transactional documents, and handling surface and subsurface issues including pipeline, road and transmission line easements. From 2009 to 2011 he represented landowners throughout the State of Texas in adjudicating routes for high voltage wind energy transmission lines.

Real Estate Law

With over 25 years of experience in handling a wide range of both commercial and farm and ranch real estate matters, Walter often represents clients in purchase, sales and financing transactions. He especially enjoys handling complex farm and ranch transactions, partitions and other matters which involve unique legal problems associated with surface, mineral, water and wind rights. Walter also assists the firm's estate planning attorneys in real estate matters.

Water Law

Clients also seek Walter's counsel about water law issues, especially as they relate to surface and mineral rights. Having been born in Sutton County during the drought of the 1950s, this area of the law has special interest to him.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Prior to joining the firm, Walter practiced with and was mentored by outstanding attorneys at the firms of Shannon Porter & Johnson LLP and Smith Rose Finley, P.C., both located in San Angelo, Texas. While with those firms, he handled a wide range of legal matters including farm and ranch real estate, oil and gas transactions, commercial litigation, wills, probate, banking and bankruptcy law. Walter's passion for the land and its resources, his West Texas roots, and broad legal background have served his clients well over the past 25 years.
