John is a shareholder in the Business Section of the firm and is Board Certified in Tax Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. John is a member of The College of the State Bar of Texas, an organization which honors those lawyers with a significant amount of continuing education credit.

AREAS OF CONCENTRATION

Taxation

John has served as tax counsel for the firm in all phases of income tax, including oil and gas tax, partnership taxation, corporate tax, and all other areas except estate and gift tax. He has written numerous tax ruling requests, several tax court petitions, and many opinions to clients on tax aspects of a particular transaction.  John also served as state chairman of the Tax Law Advisory and Exam Commission of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization from 2003-2005.

Financial Institutions

John has been involved in investigations as independent counsel in matters involving regional banks and savings and loans. These investigations have led to two convictions in federal court and numerous sanctions of officers and directors of financial institutions by their regulatory authorities. John also has represented banks in connection with mergers and acquisition transactions as well as routine loan matters.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Soon after passing the Texas Bar exam, John served as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. During his 3 year FBI career he was assigned to the Omaha and Detroit Divisions. He was involved in numerous criminal investigations and in Detroit was involved with the Domestic Intelligence Division handling internal security matters relating to both domestic and foreign threats to the government.
